Hey, Aaron?â Bree peeked around the corner of his cubicle. âAre you about ready to go? Sallie wanted us there by nine for a walk-through.â She looked pointedly at the office clock. Sheâd reminded him twice already. Now they only had fifteen minutes to get there, and the venue was the Show Me Center, the arena on the university campus, where parking was always an issue.
âHang on . . . Iâm just about to knock out this survey.â
She stared at him. âSeriously. Youâre taking a survey? We need to be on the road now. Ten minutes ago, actually.â
âNot taking a survey. Creating one. Remember? Sallie approved that at our last planning meeting. She thought it was a great idea.â
âI donât think she meant in place of working the actual events.â
He shot her an annoyed look and closed the program, then shut down his computer. âYou donât have to get snarky about it.â
âI wasnât being snarky. You can create all the surveys you want, but if youâre slacking on the actual event, I donât think youâre going to be very happy with the results of your surveys.â
He stuffed the thick logistics timeline notebook for their event into his bag and slung it over his shoulder. âOkay, Iâm ready. Letâs go. Are you always this practical? Because that could get annoying really fast.â
She laughed. But speaking of annoying, he took the prize. âI just know whoâs going to end up getting stuck with the clients youâre ignoring while you play with your stupid little surveys. Not to mention, if weâre late Sallie will have our heads.â
âFine. Come on then. Iâll drive. Iâm parked in back.â He strode past her and headed for the rear door.
She hurried back to her own cubicle and grabbed her things. When she got to Aaronâs car, he was tapping the steering wheel as if heâd been waiting on her forever.
She climbed in. âHa ha. Very funny.â
âWe have plenty of time, you know. Sallie always allows way too much lead time, and then you end up sitting there waiting for the organizers to show up before you can even do anything. Or worse, waiting for someone to come and unlock the venue.â
He was right, of course. But that didnât make it appropriate for him to brush aside Sallieâs request about their arrival time. âSo youâre making the rules now, is that it? Wow, I didnât know you got a promotion.â
He stared at her. âAre you just trying to start a fight?â
âNo, Iââ She made a face. âI guess it just would have been nice if youâd informed me that you had no intention of doing what our boss asked.â
He matched her expression. âWhat is your deal? Are you mad at me about something?â
âNo. Iâm not mad. Please, drive.â She glared at him. Was she mad? She didnât have any good reason to be. Not really. âItâs just frustrating when Iâm trying to follow the rules and youâre off freelancing doing whatever you feel like, never mind what our boss instructed us to do.
